Art Larrance and Ron Gansberg were growing tired of the ever-hoppier beers dominating tap lists across the Pacific Northwest.
So when the duo set out on opening Cascade, they considered its proximity to wine country and abundant supply of local fruit, to guide their brews. Since 2009, Cascade has made its name as one of America’s premier sour breweries, with its small-release bottles of local fruity-heavy sours, aged in those old wine and liquor barrels. It’s Kriek, Sang Rouge, Vlad the Imp Aler and dozens of other beers have hit cult-status amongst sour heads, drawing high price tags and special cellar release parties for those lucky enough to score a ticket.
Swing by the brewery’s no-frills barrel house for straight injections of the puckery ales, sold in three ounce pours to manage its potency, or head over on Tuesdays for the weekly live barrel tapping that’s been known to shower some visitors in beer.
